What Is Scrum? A Powerful Agile Method Inspired by Rugby

Scrum is one of the most widely adopted agile practices across companies seeking to enhance team collaboration, efficiency, and continuous improvement. But what exactly is Scrum and how does it work?

To truly understand Scrum, you need to look beyond definitions and explore the mechanics of how it operates inside teams.

Scrum Explained Simply: How It Works in Real Teams

In his influential book Scrum: For a Living Practice of Agility, Claude Aubry outlines the heartbeat of Scrum in action:

🟡 With Scrum, people work as a team
🟡 The rhythm is driven by a series of iterations (called sprints)
🟡 Everything to be done is organized in a single list: the Product Backlog
🟡 The team works in a continuous flow, paced by sprint events:

Let’s break that down.

Each Sprint begins with a Sprint Planning session where the team defines a shared goal and plans the work needed to achieve it.

Then, each day, the team holds a Daily Scrum (Stand-up) to align, remove blockers, and make micro-adjustments toward the goal.

At the end of the sprint:

  • The team presents the result to gather real-time feedback (Sprint Review)
  • Then reflects on how they worked (Sprint Retrospective) and explores ways to improve in the next cycle.

Scrum, at its core, is about creating momentum through structured collaboration. It’s iterative, feedback-driven, and deeply team-centered.

Where Does the Word “Scrum” Come From?

The word Scrum comes from rugby, where a scrum refers to a tightly packed formation of players used to restart play after a minor rule violation.

In rugby:

  • Players lock arms, align in formation, and push together to win back control of the ball.
  • Each player has a clear role, a purpose, and rules to follow.
  • The scrum is a moment of collective action—an organized, synchronized effort to reboot the game.

Scrum in agile borrows this metaphor. Teams align, synchronize, and push forward—together.

As Claude Aubry puts it: “The scrum allows the team to restart from a solid base, with a synchronized push from every member.”

This is the heart of agile teamwork: shared responsibility, clarity of purpose, and collective movement toward a goal.

Why Scrum Matters for Business Leaders

Scrum is more than a methodology—it’s a mindset.

For CEOs and managers navigating complexity and transformation, Scrum provides a reliable rhythm for delivering value, fostering innovation, and building stronger, more autonomous teams.

It’s especially relevant for:

  • SMEs in Switzerland seeking faster innovation cycles
  • Leadership teams wanting to empower rather than micromanage
  • Organizations aiming to improve transparency, team alignment, and customer responsiveness
